Mthunzi Mvubu

Mthunzi Mvubu (* around 1985 in Daveyton , Transvaal ) is a South African jazz musician ( saxophone , also piano, composition ).

Live and act

Mvubu began performing publicly at the age of 14 after taking piano and theory lessons at the Music Academy of Gauteng with Johnny Mekoa . First he worked as a pianist in the Gauteng Youth Jazz Orchestra and the Johnny Mekoa Big Band , later he switched to the alto saxophone . With the Music Academy of Gauteng Jazz Orchestra he also performed in Europe and North America; with the MAG Big Band he accompanied the singers Kevin Mahogany (2004) and Everett Greene (2005).

Mvubu played in the wind section of the O'Jays , the Temptations and Clarence Carter at the South African Standard Bank Joy of Jazz Festival and on some South Africa tours . He is a member of Marcus Wyatt's Blue Note Tribute Band . He has also performed with Abdullah Ibrahim , Themba Mkhize , Victor Ntoni , Feya Faku , Tsepo Tshola , Jason Yarde , Andile Yenana , Musa Manzini , Jimmy Dludlu , Jonas Gwangwa , Herbie Tsoaeli and Thandiswa Mazwai .

With the quintet and sextet by Nduduzo Makhathini , Mvubu released the albums Sketches of Tomorrow and Mother Tongue in 2014 . He can also be heard on albums by Tumi Mogorosi ( Project Elo , 2013), Shabaka Hutchings and Lindiwe Maxolo. With the trio of Kyle Shepherd and Lionel Loueke he gave several concerts at the 2016 SWR New Jazz Meeting , which were documented on the double CD Sound Portraits from Contemporary Africa .
