The banded snails ( Cepaea ) are a genus of land snails (Stylommatophora) from the family of snails (Helicidae).

features

The genus is characterized by spherical housings with mostly noticeable brown stripes along the housing. The name of the genus comes from this banding. However, there are also pure yellow or pink specimens. The pronounced polymorphism in the housing color is interpreted as a response to the selection of predators such as the song thrush , but also as an adaptation to different temperatures in their habitats.

Occurrence and way of life

The genus occurs in Europe and carried in North America. The animals live in meadows, forests, parks and gardens. Their activity period in Western and Central Europe extends from March to October. Then they go into a cold rigor that lasts about five months.

Systematics

The genus of the banded snail was previously represented by four species in Europe. After molecular genetic studies in 2015/16, two species must now be assigned to other genera. In the genus Cepaea only two species remain (as well as some fossil species):

The ribbed banded snail was transferred to the genus Caucasotachea C. Boettger, 1909 ( Caucasotachea vindobonensis ) and the wood snail to the genus Macularia Martens, 1850 ( Macularia sylvatica ).
