The Böhnecke Glacier is a steep and 5 km wide glacier on the Black Coast of the Palmerland in the south of the Antarctic Peninsula . It flows in a south-easterly direction to the north-western section of Violante Inlet .
Scientists from the United States Antarctic Service Expedition (1939–1941) discovered and photographed the glacier from the air in December 1940. Additional aerial photographs were taken in 1947 during the American Ronne Antarctic Research Expedition (1947–1948). Expedition leader Finn Ronne mapped it on site in collaboration with the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey . The latter named the glacier after the German oceanographer Günther Böhnecke (1896–1981), participant of the German Atlantic Expedition (1925–1927) with the research ship Meteor .
