The Böller is an approximately 10 km² closed deciduous forest area between Gerstungen and Lauchröden in the west of the Wartburg district in Thuringia .

location

The Böller is located between Gerstungen in the southwest, Sallmannshausen in the northwest, Lauchröden in the northeast and Unterellen in the southeast. The forest extends 4 km in north-south and about 3 km in east-west direction. The highest peaks are Hardt ( 354.4  m above sea level ) and the Böller ( 321.9  m above sea level ), the Lutzberg ( 322  m above sea level ), the Limpertshöhe ( 308  m above sea level ) and the Kolmischer Berg ( 293.8  m above sea level ).

Waters

The firecrackers reach in the west and north to the Werra . Around ten springs and small streams arise in the forest, some of which are also used for fish farming. The most famous source is the Franzosenbrunnen near Lauchröden.

vegetation

Are predominantly z. Sometimes structurally rich woodruff and barley beech forests . Common ash and oak are plentiful in the forests. The oak dominates in places on alternating moist locations over clayey limestone soils . Impressive old specimens can be found on Kammweg.

economy

The firecrackers have been shaped by forestry and hunting for centuries. The beech age group forest is predominant. Spruce, larch and pine trees were replanted on various occasions in the clear cuts. The adjoining places had the right to take place. The firecrackers also served as a training area for the border troops during the GDR era . For this purpose, a firing range was created on the southern edge, not far from Kratzeroda, which has been secured and closed since 1990.

tourism

The forest area is developed for tourism through the Sallmannshäuser Rennsteig , which crosses the Böller over a length of about 5 km in a north-south direction. Forest walks and cycling are generally possible on the forest roads. There is a branch from the forest village of Hardt to Lauchröden. The adventure farm Peter hiking accommodation is located at the southwestern entrance in the Herda district of Kratzeroda. The Böller can be reached from Eisenach and Gerstungen by bus or regional train.
