Cooper Moor

The Böttcher Moor is a landscape protection area in the Lower Saxony municipality of Weyhe in the district of Diepholz .

The landscape protection area with the registration number LSG DH 049 has been under protection since October 29, 1938 (date of regulation: October 6, 1938). It is located south of the Leeste district of Weyher and essentially consists of an approximately 1.2 hectare large and approximately 2 meter deep Schlatt , also known as Böttcher's Moor, which was formed after the Glaciation of the Vistula . It is a remnant of an area embedded in a heathland with small still waters and moored areas, which was cultivated from the 19th century . The trees and bushes faltering around the Schlatt are included in the landscape protection area.

The Schlatt was used as a bathing lake until the 1970s . With the opening of the open-air swimming pool in Weyhe in the mid-1970s, the swimming pool was closed. As a result, trees and bushes grew around the Schlatt, which now completely surround it. The water level of the Schlatt sinks due to the lowering of the groundwater as a result of drinking water extraction , land consolidation and stream straightening . In the meantime it has fallen so far that large areas of the banks of the Schlatt have silted up and been taken over by cattails , rushes and sedges . Birch trees are now also growing in the areas that have fallen dry. At the end of January 2012, parts of the wood on the banks were removed and the silt was desludged. There is a jetty on the west bank of the Schlatt, from which the water can be seen.

The community of Weyhe has looked after this body of water for many years. Together with NABU Weyhe, a nature conservation station for environmental educational events was built west of the moor in 2007. A tree and nature trail has been laid out on the adjacent nature experience area.
