The tufted lady's slipper ( Cypripedium fasciculatum ) is a species of the genus Cypripedium in the orchid family (Orchidaceae).
description
The tufted lady's slipper is a perennial plant with a rhizome that reaches heights of 6 to 35 centimeters when blooming. The inflorescence extends even higher until the fruit is ripe. The two leaves are almost opposite, usually sit in or above the center of the stem, are bare and measure 5 to 10 × 3.5 to 7 centimeters. They are rounded-oval in shape. The inflorescence consists of two to four or more flowers and is arched to nodding. The petals are yellowish and - with the exception of the less clearly marked lip - purple-brown. Except for the lip, the petals are lanceolate and 1 to 2.5 centimeters long. The lip is striped yellow-green. With a size of 8 to 14, rarely up to 25 millimeters, it has an inlet opening of 4 to 5 millimeters in diameter. The staminodium is oval to oblong in shape.
Flowering time is from April to August.
Occurrence
The tufted lady's slipper occurs in temperate western North America in moist to dry, light coniferous forests at altitudes of (0 to) 900 to 1400 (to 3200) meters. The distribution area includes Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Idaho, Montana, Wyoming, Utah and California.
use
The tufted lady's slipper is rarely used as an ornamental plant on the edges of trees.
