Sand gypsophila ( Gypsophila fastigiata subsp.arenaria )

features

The tufted gypsum herb is a deciduous, rosette-free Chamaephyte that reaches heights of 20 to 50 centimeters. The plant forms a Pleiokorm root . There are non-flowering shoots at the bottom. The sheets are 1 to 5 millimeters wide and have one nerve. The flowers are densely arranged in umbrella-shaped thyrs at the branch ends. The inflorescence axes are hairy glands. The petals are white or pink and 1.5 times as long as the calyx.

The flowering period extends from June to September. The flowers are pre-male and are pollinated by insects. The seeds are spread by the wind or by shock or shaking propagation.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 34.

Occurrence

In Germany, the tufted gypsophila occurs scattered in North Thuringia and East Brandenburg, and rarely in East Rhineland-Palatinate in Rheinhessen, in Northeast Saxony, in Southwest Saxony-Anhalt and West Brandenburg. In Austria, the tufted gypsum herb occurs only in Marchfeld (Lower Austria). Further distribution: Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Eastern Europe.

The calcareous species grows here in continental gypsum rock corridors and dry grasslands, in richer sandy dry grasslands and in sparse pine forests. It occurs in Central Europe mainly in societies of the association Koelerion glaucae, but also in those of the association Seslerio-Festucion, Cytiso-Pinion or Festucion valesiacae.
