Bărăția (Bucharest)
The Bărăția ("Brethren Church", from Slovak. Brat , Hungarian barát , "brother, monk"), actually Sfânta Maria a darurilor ("St. Mary of the Graces"), is the oldest Roman Catholic church in the Romanian capital Bucharest . It is located in the city center on IC Bratianu Street .
history
The Bărăția Church is located in the commercial district, on the site of an old Franciscan wooden church. This was replaced by a baroque building in 1716 by the Italian Antonio Maria del Chiaro , the secretary Constantin Brâncoveanus . The Bucharest fire in 1847 reportedly started near the church. This was badly damaged. Thanks to generous donations from Vienna , the church and monastery were rebuilt a year later.
building
The buildings from 1848 are kept in neo-Romanesque forms. Through the mighty gate tower , to which a former convent building is attached to the southeast in the street front, the visitor reaches the inner courtyard, on the opposite side of which the former main building of the monastery stands. To the north-west of this is the church, a hall building with a flat-closing apse . The furnishings date from the second half of the 19th century, but also include some pieces from the Baroque period.
