Club work

Projects

The association initiates projects and specialist conferences, often with the involvement of companies such as B. the Sustainability Leadership Forum (SLF), which should enable the transfer of knowledge as well as the content-related development of concrete problem solutions through the direct exchange of experience between science and industry. BAUM organizes its own competitions such as B. since 2005 the office & environment competition, which distinguishes the careful use of resources in the company and the consideration of environmental and sustainability aspects when purchasing office products.

TREE e. V. is also involved in research projects, such as the BMBF funded project "New approaches, strategies, business and communication models for Bi okunststoffe as a component of Na chhaltigen economy" ( Bina ), which evaluated the use of bioplastics. The focus here was on the production of the biopolymers and subsequent processing into the finished bioplastic.

The association initiated the three-year BAUM Zukunftsfonds eG, which allowed citizens to invest financially in energy-saving projects and was rewarded with a return of 3-5%. The fund was awarded the SPD innovation prize. Awarding

The association has been awarding its own BAUM environmental award since 1993 . According to his own statement, the undoped award honors outstanding personal achievements and individual commitment of the award winner in corporate environmental protection. Important criteria in the selection and evaluation of the award winners are the practical relevance and the transferability of the initiated measures to other companies. The BAUM environmental prize is awarded in the categories of large companies, small and medium-sized companies, scientists, media representatives and institutions / associations.

Since 2004, the International BAUM Special Prize has been awarded to personalities who are committed to environmental and nature conservation or to social issues.

criticism

The association's work is based on "insight" and has an "appeal character" to encourage companies and interest groups to act more environmentally friendly. However, the association does not require any binding rules from its members. The association does not verify in its statutes what “sustainability” and “ sustainability management ” mean specifically for the association in terms of corporate policy measures.

Companies that have repeatedly attracted attention for their environmentally harmful production methods, arms production or socially difficult work situations are also members of the BAUM support group. Furniture company IKEA Germany , among others, is a BAUM member and obtains a large part of its pine furniture wood from the far north of Russia . The Ikea subsidiary Swedwood has leased 300,000 hectares of natural forest in Karelia alone and is cutting down forest areas that have been untouched by the timber industry . Other members who engage in environmentally harmful business practices include: B. Danone , Lacoste , Porsche , TUI Cruises , Procter & Gamble and Commerzbank .

Award of Unilever boss

In 2011, the BAUM environmental award went to the then Unilever boss Harry JM Brouwer, as he “had a decisive influence on the sustainability activities of the group”. This award was criticized by other NGOs, including a. due to Unilever's sources of supply of palm oil that were not secured as sustainable at that time . In response to this, the association “ Save the Rainforest ” awarded the Unilever boss its anti -prize BAUM-AB-Prize “for aid to environmental destruction and disregard for human rights in Indonesia”. Reinhard Behrend from "Rettet den Regenwald" characterized the BAUM association in connection with the controversial environmental award ceremony 2011 as follows: "BAUM is an association in which 500 companies sit and pat each other on the back in a media-effective manner."

Awarding of the prize to AIDA

In 2014, the environmental award in the large company category was given to the cruise company AIDA . This has been criticized by environmental organizations.
