The BBÖ VT 160 was a motorized multiple unit converted from a truck for the express freight traffic of the Austrian Federal Railways (BBÖ). It was rebuilt in the main workshop in St. Pölten in 1933 and was in operation until 1939.

History and technical data

In 1933 this motorized multiple unit was converted for freight transport for the BBÖ. It originated from a truck from the Perl automobile factory and was intended for express transport of general cargo on branch lines .

The railcar was stationed in St. Valentin . In 1938 the vehicle was taken over by the Deutsche Reichsbahn and named series 728 . However, there was no longer any suitable area of application for the car, so that it was retired on August 22, 1939.

Vehicle body

The luggage railcar was used as a one-way car. During the conversion, the basic concept of the vehicle was essentially retained. At the end stations, it could only be turned on a turntable or via a turning stamp attached to the vehicle. There was the possibility of sanding the drive wheel from the front.

The machine system was modeled on the donor vehicle. The vehicle had a six-cylinder four-stroke Otto engine with a power of 32 kW (44 HP) at 2,400 min -1 . With a piston diameter of 73 mm and a piston stroke of 120 mm, the engine belonged to the Langhuber class .
