BIOPAT sponsorships for biological diversity e. V. (BIOPAT) is a German non-governmental organization that is primarily dedicated to promoting science and research. To this end, sponsorships are awarded for newly discovered animal and plant species , combined with the right to make a proposal for the naming of this new species.

history

The association was founded in 1999, based on an idea by Gerhard Haszprunar . GIZ was won as a partner . Other founding members included Clas Naumann ( ZFMK ), Michael Türkay ( SGN ), Kurt Schminke ( GfBS ), Karl Eduard Linsenmair ( GTÖ ) and Pierre Ibisch .

Use of funds

The minimum amount for a sponsorship is € 2,600. Around 50% of the donations raised are used to research and preserve new animal and plant species in their home countries. The rest is available to carry out the time-consuming initial description , which is not always possible due to scarce research funds .
