Jörn Koehler

Jörn Köhler (born June 23, 1970 in Göttingen ) is a German herpetologist .

Life

After completing his biology diploma in 1995, Köhler completed a doctoral degree from 1997 to 2000 at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn , where he obtained a doctorate in natural sciences (Dr. rer. Nat.) With a dissertation on the diversity patterns of amphibians in Bolivian mountain forests . received his doctorate. For this purpose, he carried out various field studies in Bolivia between 1994 and 1999 . In 1999 he was a founding member of the non-governmental organization BIOPAT Sponsorships for Biodiversity , where he acts as deputy chairman. From 2001 to 2005 he was a research assistant at the Alexander Koenig Zoological Research Museum in Bonn , where he worked as a scientific coordinator for the BIOTA East Africa project . This interdisciplinary research project is a cooperation between Museum Koenig and the Federal Ministry of Education and Research . Since March 2005, Köhler has been curator of the vertebrate zoology department at the Hessian State Museum in Darmstadt , where he curated the special exhibition Stages - Episodes of Life from September 28, 2018 to January 27, 2019 and also published the accompanying book.

From 2007 to 2013 Köhler was a member of the steering committee of the German Society for Herpetology and Terrarium Studies (DGHT) and editor of their journal elaphe - Terraristik, Naturschutz, Forschung . He is also editor-in-chief of SALAMANDRA - German Journal of Herpetology .

Köhler's projects include species protection of Madagascan amphibians, the intrinsic and extrinsic determinants of evolution, the identification of phylogenetic and geographical patterns and the systematics of reptiles and amphibians in South America and Madagascar .

In 2007, Köhler was part of a team of researchers who, under the leadership of Frank Glaw , discovered the smallest known species of chameleon in the world on the Malagasy island of Nosy Hara . This form was first described as Brookesia micra in 2012 .
