Ignacio José de la Riva de la Viña (born January 8, 1960 ) is a Spanish herpetologist . His research focus is the neotropical herpetofauna .

Life

In 1986, De la Riva obtained a Masters degree from the Complutense University of Madrid . From June 1986 to December 1987 he was a fellow of the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas and later commissioner of the Estación Biológica de Doñana for the cataloging of the herpetological collection. From January 1988 to August 1990 he had a scholarship from the Instituto de Cooperación Iberoamericana, through the Asociación de Amigos de Doñana, for the realization of his doctoral thesis in Bolivia . From April 1991 to December 1992 he had a scholarship from the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria . In 1993 he was at the Complutense University of Madrid with a thesis Ecología de una comunidad de neotropical ANFIBIOS durante la estación lluviosa led by Javier Castroviejo and Luis Felipe López-Jurado for doctor doctorate. From May to December 1993 he worked for the Belgian company Agreco as part of the ECOFAC program and with funds from the European Economic Community as a forest ecologist to assess the biodiversity in the Monte Alén National Park in Equatorial Guinea . From April 1994 to April 1996 he conducted research on a postdoctoral fellowship at the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas . From May to June 1995 he carried out a study of amphibians and reptiles under the direction of Santiago Castroviejo as part of the project inventory of the fauna and flora of the Parque Nacional Coiba, Panama . Since May 1996 De la Riva has been a senior researcher at the Department of Biodiversity and Evolutionary Biology of the Museo Nacional de Ciencias Naturales in Madrid .

His main research interests include taxonomy , systematics , phylogenesis , biogeography and the way of life of reptiles and amphibians. His main focus is on the tropical frogs from Latin America . His further interests are the theoretical aspects of taxonomy and systematics, such as species concepts, the gap between phylogenies and classifications, the effects of naming species, integrative taxonomy, and much more. De la Riva has been researching the Neotropics since 1987 and the main target of his research were the Andean and Amazonian frogs of Bolivia and southern Peru. He also devotes himself to the Bolivian lizard species of the genus Liolaemus , nature conservation and research into the extent and effect of chytridiomycosis on amphibians in Bolivia. Regarding reptiles, he works with a large international team to study the effects of climate change on lizards around the world.

One of De la Riva's most famous discoveries is the Sehuencas water frog ( Telmatobius yuracare ) from Bolivia. From 2008 only one male named Romeo was known of this species, until five more specimens were rediscovered in early 2019.
