from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The BKN Strobel GmbH & Co. KG was an assortment nursery headquartered in Holm (Pinneberg) , Schleswig-Holstein . It specialized in growing outdoor and container roses , as well as other container plants , and was one of the largest companies in Europe in this business area.

history

Gustav Strobel founded the company in Pinneberg in 1927 under the name Strobel & Co Tree and Rose Schools , initially focusing on outdoor plants. In 1951 Strobel was able to acquire the German general agency of the large French rose growing group of companies Meilland for all their new rose products (garden roses and cut roses). The testing and selection of the innovations bred in climatically favorable France for the German market took place in Germany. In addition to roses, tree nursery trees have also been grown in containers since 1963.

In 1987 Strobel & Co was taken over by BaumschulenKontor Nord (BKN) in Rellingen , founded in 1971 by Hanns-Henning Kähler and Dieter Schakat, and renamed to BKN Strobel . In 2002 the tree nursery was relocated to a newly created 60 hectare company site in Holm, at that time one of the most modern container nurseries in Europe. From 2005 to 2015 Hannsjörg Kähler (son of the BKN founder) and Hajo Steinmeyer were managing directors.

The company currently has a total area of around 80 hectares, on which both outdoor and greenhouse plants were grown, including more than 300 different rose varieties. In cooperation with the French rose breeding company Meilland, new products were developed especially for the German market. BKN Strobel mainly delivered to bulk buyers such as B. Garden centers . BKN Strobel also issued licenses for the breeding of Meilland roses by other rose nurseries. Up to 120 employees were employed at BKN Strobel, of which around 30 were seasonal workers. In-house and order fairs were held regularly.

In 2015 the company filed for bankruptcy; After no buyer was found, business operations were discontinued in early 2016. The main reason is said to have been the dependence on the also insolvent major customers Praktiker and Max Bahr (DIY chains).
