Boøwy was a famous Japanese rock band. In the 1980s, they achieved legendary status in their home country. They covered a wide musical spectrum, from punk to pop rock and had and have fans of all ages.

The name Boøwy is based on the musician David Bowie , who is very much appreciated by Boøwy guitarist Tomoyasu Hotei.

Band history

Kyōsuke Himuro and Tomoyasu Hotei met in 1979 at a band competition in Takasaki ( Gunma ) when they competed there for various bands. Himuro won the contest with his band Death Penalty , while Hotei took second place with his band Blue Film . But Himuro didn't make a breakthrough afterwards, not even with a new band. So he finally decided together with Hotei, who had since been expelled from high school, to found a new formation. In addition to Himuro and Hotei, this initially consisted of Tsunematsu Matsui and Atsushi Moroboshi from Death Penalty , Kuniaki Fukuzawa from Blue Film and Mamoru Kimura from Himuro's interim band Spinach Power . They first called themselves Bōi (暴 威) and occasionally played in Shinjuku .

Kimura left the band in 1981 and was replaced by Makoto Takashi. In the meantime, the band had become one of the most sought-after bands on the Shinjuku concert scene and signed a record deal with Victor . In 1982 they changed their name to Boøwy and released their first album called Moral . In that year, Boøwy's style developed from punk to pop , which prompted band members Fukuzawa and Moroboshi to leave the band after their concert on October 9, 1982.

In 1983 the band switched to their own new record company φ-connection , which was a very unusual step at the time. The following time was therefore a very difficult one for the band, especially when it came to PR issues. After spending 1984 on a concert tour, they finally signed a contract with the major record company Toshiba-EMI . Boowy performed, in London, England, at the Marquee Club on March 12th, 1985.

Boøwy returned to the big stage and became Japan's number one rock band after their album of the same name, Boøwy . In 1987, on their Case of Boøwy tour, they played a four-hour program with their entire song repertoire from the start. On December 24th of the same year Boøwy announced their dissolution at a concert in Shibuya . The reasons are not fully understood, but the separation is probably due to differences between Himuro and Hotei. For their farewell concerts on April 4 and 5, 1988 in the Tokyo Dome , the 95,000 tickets were sold in ten minutes.
