The Federal Association of Road Construction and Transport Engineers (BSVI) is an umbrella organization of the associations of road construction and transport engineers ( VSVI for short ) of the individual federal states in Germany . The association, based in Munich , was founded in 1963 and currently has around 19,000 members. At the extraordinary 41st Assembly of Delegates on April 23, 2016, Rainer Popp was elected as the new President of the Federal Association.

Purpose and task

According to its own information, the Federal Association pursues the following purposes and tasks: It is committed to promoting further training in the technical and scientific field and is involved in the development of future-oriented concepts in the field of transport planning. Furthermore, the aim is to maintain the building culture and to support the exchange of ideas within the profession.

The Federal Association tries to fulfill its tasks through public relations work, specialist conferences and specialist publications. Current issues are discussed in the specialist committees and bodies and the results are published in the form of reports. Outstanding engineering achievements are regularly awarded in a competition (so-called “BSVI Prize”).

Since 2013 the "BSVI Prize" has been reissued. In a revised concept, the "German Road and Traffic Engineering Award" is awarded every two years, in which future-oriented and trend-setting engineering achievements in the areas of traffic engineering, road planning and road construction are recognized. The most promising projects will be determined and evaluated in three categories by a high-ranking jury. In the "Building Culture" category, based on the Weimar Declaration of the BSVI, planning qualities such as design and spatial integration in and out of town are in demand. “Verkehr im Dialog” responds to the challenge of dealing with the new public, with which road and traffic planners are increasingly confronted today. Therefore, special processes of citizen participation and project communication should be recognized in this category. Finally, the “Innovation” category looks for advances in the road and traffic sector, which in particular reveal new ideas and services and offer great potential for the future. After the competition, both the award winners and the nominees will also have the opportunity, in coordination with the BSVI, to present themselves and their project to the specialist public in the magazines “Straße und Autobahn” and “Straßenverkehrstechnik”.
