Ba Chúc is a municipality in An Giang Province in Vietnam . The place gained fame during the Vietnam War. The New York Times revealed on January 10, 1971 that civilians were being forced by ARVN officers and American military advisors to clear land mines laid by Viet Cong units and the Vietnamese People's Army .
The place was also the site of a gruesome massacre by the Khmer Rouge in 1978 . The guerrilla movement from neighboring Cambodia murdered 3,157 civilians in the Ba Chúc massacre ; only two survived the massacre.
