Baba Wida ( Bulgarian Баба Вида ) is a medieval fortress in the Bulgarian city of Vidin . The fortress on the banks of the Danube was the main defense system of Vidin and the most important fortress in northwestern Bulgaria in the Middle Ages. Today the fortress houses a museum of the same name. It is listed among the 100 national tourist objects of Bulgaria created by the Bulgarian Tourist Board.

history

In the 10th century, the foundation walls of Baba Wida were built on the spot where there was still an observation tower of the Roman fortress "Bononija" (today Vidin). In the following centuries the fortress was rebuilt and expanded several times. The undeveloped inner courtyard of the fortress, which is surrounded by a moat, is surrounded by two fortress walls. The inner wall has four main towers. Baba Wida was able to withstand a siege by the Byzantine forces for eight months before it was destroyed. Baba Wida was rebuilt under Ivan Strazimir . After Baba Wida lost its importance as a fortress towards the end of the 18th century, it again played an important role as an arsenal and prison during the Ottoman rule in Bulgaria. Today the fortress, the main part of which is in its original state, serves as a historical museum.

Say about Baba Wida

According to legend, the building of the fortress goes back to a Bulgarian tsar who ruled in Vidin and had three daughters named Wida , Kula and Gamza . Before his death, he divided his kingdom among the three. Wida, the oldest of the three, received Widin and the lands in the north to the Carpathian Mountains , Kula received Zaječar and the Timočka valley and Gamza received the land in the west up to the Morava . While Gamza and Kula married aristocratic and alcoholic aristocrats, Wida remained unmarried and built the fortress in Vidin, which was then named "Grandma Wida".
