Zaječar ( Cyrillic Зајечар; German outdated Zatitscher ; Romanian Zăiceari ) is a city in eastern Serbia, located in the so-called Timočka Krajina . It is the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name and the district of Zaječar . It is estimated that over 50,000 people live in the city today.

The Timok River flows through Zaječar . The city is the seat of the Timok Eparchy of the Serbian Orthodox Church .

Surname

In the Serbian language , the city is known as Зајечар or Zaječar . In the Romanian language the city is called Zăii-cer , Zăiceri or Zăicear .

In the Serbian, Bulgarian and Torlak language the name is derived from the hare, Serbian Zec , Bulgarian заек (zaek), Torlak Zajec . The name Zăii-cer in Romanian means gods are in demand (for the victims) .

story

The town of Felix Romuliana was located near the present center of Zaječar in the 3rd century AD. The excavation site of the same name has a small visitor center. Remains of the fortifications as well as fragments of columns, floor mosaics and other finds can be viewed.

The city was first mentioned in Ottoman records under its current name in 1466 . At that time only eight families lived here. In 1834 the Serbian Orthodox Cathedral of the Birth of the Virgin Mary was built.

The Zaječar Guitarriad takes place in the town every year . In 2006 the Serbian Triathlon Championship was held here. In addition, the city has an extensive leisure and recreation facility on the Timokufer with a well-kept beach and stage as well as spaces for a wide variety of ball sports, including a large park-like golf course .
