The white wine variety Babeasca Grise is an autochthonous variety from Romania . It was discovered in Romania in 1975 by employees of the Odobeşti Institute . It is a mutation of the red variety Băbească Neagră . Similar to the varieties Pinot Gris or Gewürztraminer, this variety is one of the white varieties despite the light red berries. The name means gray grandmother's grape.

Cultivation area in Romania 328 ha (as of 2013).

Ampelographic varietal characteristics

  • The shoot tip is open. It is not hairy and slightly shiny.
  • The large leaves are rounded, five-lobed and not cupped. The stem bay is U-shaped. The sheet is serrated.
  • The grape is large and fluffy. The round berries are small and almost pale red in color.

Wine

As a rule, simple wines are made from this variety.
