The former Babenberger barracks in Wöllersdorf , Lower Austria , was built in 1830 as accommodation for the staff of the rocket factory located there and was originally called the water barracks .

history

monarchy

The Arar acquired the water gradient between Wöllersdorf and Steinabrückl in order to be able to use the water power of the Piesting for the production of rockets. Three production buildings were built and - since there were no accommodations for the staff - a three-story residential building, which was called the "water barracks" because of its proximity to the water. The decree of 1967 about the renaming of the Babenberger barracks names 1825 as the year of construction and the purpose of the powder depot.

In 1867 the Austrian rocket artillery was disbanded and, as a result, the production of war rockets was stopped.

Little is known about the occupancy of the building, which is still used as a barracks . Allegedly only infantry units of the Austro-Hungarian Army were stationed here, including the high and German masters .

First republic

Between the end of the war in 1918 and 1920, the newly founded People's Army was stationed here, followed by units of the Federal Army .

From 1925 to 1930 the former production buildings near the water barracks were demolished.

Third Reich

The German Wehrmacht also used the water barracks . It is said that the batteries of the Russian General Vlasov, who was captured by Germany in 1942, were trained here between 1944 and 1945 . He had set up an anti-Soviet " Russian Liberation Army " from Russian prisoners of war and volunteers .

Second republic

Russian soldiers were stationed here during the occupation . Then the newly founded Austrian Armed Forces began with the renovation work, until in 1956 and 1957 the water barracks were used by the Red Cross as a reception camp for Hungarian refugees after the Hungarian uprising .

In 1962 the armed forces took over the barracks again and expanded them. In July 1967 the water barracks was renamed "Babenberger-Kaserne".

From September 1973 to September 1974 the Wöllersdorf soldiers were quartered in the Martinek barracks in Baden near Vienna , since the Ministry of the Interior set up a collection point for Jewish emigrants from Russia as a result of the hostage-taking in Marchegg .

In 1997 the 136,752 m² area with the Babenberger barracks was cleared by the armed forces and handed over to the federal real estate company BIG on June 30, 1999. In 2004 it was a point of a parliamentary question to the Federal Minister for National Defense. One of the questions asked was whether the barracks had already been sold, whether the Federal Ministry for National Defense was still paying rent to the federal real estate company BIG, and if so, how much.

After the closure of the Babenberger barracks, the “Health Care Center Wöllersdorf” project was presented in October 2005 as a subsequent use of the area. In October 2011, the barracks were sold to a Styrian company for 1.3 million euros. Nothing is known about the subsequent use.
