Babette Winter (* 6 June 1964 in Castrop-Rauxel as Babette Kämpgen ) is a German chemist and politician . From 2014 to 2020 she was State Secretary for Culture and Europe in the Thuringian State Chancellery and in 2019 a member of the European Parliament .

Life and career

Babette Winter studied after the Abitur at the Ernst-Barlach-Gymnasium in Castrop-Rauxel from 1983 Chemistry at the Westphalian Wilhelms University in Muenster and was there in 1991 with a thesis on the development of an enzymatic Fliess-injection analysis system for formaldehyde doctorate . She initially worked in research-related public relations and in 2004 switched to the service of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as press spokeswoman and head of public relations for the State Office for Nature, Environment and Consumer Protection . She then worked in the North Rhine-Westphalian representation to the European Union in Brussels . From 2012 to 2014 she headed the Department for Environmental Policy in the Thuringian Ministry of Agriculture, Forests, Environment and Nature Conservation .

From December 5, 2014 to March 4, 2020 she held the post of State Secretary for Culture and Europe in the Thuringian State Chancellery. She was given temporary leave of absence for the duration of her seven-month membership in the European Parliament.

Winter is divorced, has two children and lives in Erfurt .

Babette Winter joined the SPD in 1989 and held various functions in the party's committees.

For the election to the 8th European Parliament on May 25, 2014 , Winter ran as a substitute candidate for Jakob von Weizsäcker . After the latter resigned his mandate on January 6, 2019, she moved to Parliament on January 10, 2019 and was a member of it until the end of the electoral term on July 1, 2019. In the election for the 9th European Parliament on May 26, 2019 , she missed re-entry into parliament in 27th place on the joint list drawn up by the SPD for all countries.
