The Backdoor Bay is a small bay on the eastern side of Cape Royds on the Antarctic Ross Island . Participants in the Nimrod Expedition (1907–1909), led by the British polar explorer Ernest Shackleton, unloaded material and supplies for the establishment of their base camp here. The bay was named after the bay on Cape Royds on the opposite west side, known as Front Door Bay ( 77 ° 33 ' S , 166 ° 8' E ).
A four-hectare area on Backdoor Bay was placed under the special protection of the Antarctic Treaty as ASPA-157 at the request of New Zealand in 2002 . Shackleton's historic cabin is in the area.
