Backfire or Backfire! (translated "misfire") is a British crime film directed by Paul Almond from 1962 . It was produced by the film company Merton Park Studios . The screenplay comes from the screenwriter Robert Banks Stewart and is based on the novels by Edgar Wallace . The film was part of the first half of the Edgar Wallace Mysteries , a series of 47 Edgar Wallace film adaptations made by Merton Park Studios between 1960 and 1965; it was never shown in Germany.

The company "Venetia Beauty Preperations" is heavily indebted and its owner Bernard Curzon financially dependent on his American partner Mitchell Logan and his wife Pauline. He wants to solve the problems with a fire and hires the arsonist Willy Kyser, who sets a fire in the company. The cleaning lady Hannah Chenko dies in the fire. Fearing that he might betray him, Mitchell Logan kills his business partner and disguises the murder as suicide; however, his daughter Shirley Curzon also senses the crime. Insurance detective Jack Bryce and Scotland Yard inspector Fletcher catch Logan before he also murders Shirley Curzon.
