The Badische Stahlwerke GmbH (BSW) is a steel producer in Kehl . With the help of two electric arc furnaces , the only steelworks in Baden-Württemberg uses scrap to produce steel for reinforcement in the construction industry.

Geographical location

The plant is located on the headland at the mouth of the Kinzig and the Rhine between these two rivers.

history

The company emerged from the Süddeutsche Drahtververarbeitung GmbH founded in 1955 by Willy Korf . In 1966, Korf started up a rolling mill , initially having to buy in the raw material, the billets . In 1968 two electric arc furnaces, two continuous casters and another rolling mill went into operation; at the same time the company received its current name.

In November 2009, an increase in production from 2.2 million to 2.8 million tons of steel was approved by the Freiburg Regional Council. To this end, up to 300 million euros will be invested in the next few years, including in a new power supply, a new electric arc furnace and new ladle furnaces . In the spring of 2008, a new gate, a new car workshop and a new shift base for around 5 million euros were inaugurated as part of the investment program. At the beginning of 2009, a new reversible cooling bed followed for one of the continuous casting plants for 5.5 million euros. The Badische Stahlwerke are a member of the Saarhütten association and the Baden industrial association .

In 2019, plans were announced to recuperate part of the waste heat from the steelworks and use it for energy. The waste heat is to be used both for the production of wood pellets in Kehl and for feeding the district heating network in Strasbourg . In an initial expansion phase, 35 GWh of heat are to be used for pellet production and 45 GWh for the Strasbourg district heating network, and further customers are to be connected to the network later. The steelworks and the cities of Kehl and Strasbourg signed a declaration of intent for this purpose in May 2019.

production

Annual steel production in 2014 was around 1.9 million tons, which corresponds to around 5% of German steel production. Measured by the ratio of annual production to the workforce of almost 1429 employees, BSW is one of the world's steelworks with the highest productivity. In 1968 the annual production was only around 150,000 tons.

The most important products are steel bars with diameters from 10 to 40 mm and wire rod from 5.5 to 20 mm ribbed for the manufacture of reinforcement products such as welded wire mesh .
