The Bagauda Reservoir (also called Bagaudo) is a reservoir in Nigeria . It is located in the northern state of Kano near the town of Bebeji , which is about 45 km southwest of the city of Kano .

The dam

It is a 20 m high and 2100 m long dam made of bulk material with a reservoir , which normally has 22 million m³ of storage capacity. The dam was built between 1969 and 1970 for irrigation, water supply, fishing, and recreational recreation. There is a hotel at the reservoir, the Bagauda Resort Hotel.

Dam break

In August 1988, heavy rains caused the water level to rise. The storage capacity rose to 42 million m³ by August 15. The dam was then overflowed, so that it collapsed on August 16, 1988. The resulting tidal wave killed 23 people, 200,000 people were made homeless, 18,000 houses and 14,000 farms were destroyed.

According to Ahmed and Musa (1989), the causes were structural errors. Settlements and cracks were observed as early as 1986. The overflow height of the flood relief was then lowered by 4 m. In 1987 animal holes were found in the dam, they were filled with sand. At the beginning of 1988 the cracks were also filled with sand.

The dam was rebuilt.

Two more dams broke in Nigeria afterwards: the Cham dam in Gombe in 1991 and the Bagoma dam in Kaduna in 1994.
