The quarry pond in Ingolstadt is located about 1.5 km southwest of Ingolstadt's old town . With an area of around 50 hectares, it is the largest lake in Ingolstadt , followed by the Auwaldsee . The lake created by gravel mining is used for local recreation.

The local recreation area is connected to the alluvial forest area ("Schütt") running downstream and up the Danube, the lake itself borders on the reservoir of the Ingolstadt Danube hydropower plant in the south. Around the Ingolstadt Baggersee there is a graveled cycle and footpath with a length of 5.3 km, supplemented by clay paths and access roads.

In the west, the alluvial forests of the Danube come close to the quarry pond, which is the second largest hardwood floodplain on the entire Danube . The lake is only separated from the Danube by a narrow stretch of land, the width of which is only 40 m in some places. It was created between the 1950s and 1970s in connection with the construction of the Ingolstadt barrage through extensive gravel mining and, after its recultivation, is part of the largest local recreation area in Ingolstadt with 150 hectares. For this purpose, play and beach volleyball courts, mini golf and an excursion restaurant were built around the quarry pond . The SeaScouts clubhouse is now being used for other purposes. After intermittent problems with the water quality, the quarry pond has been designated as a swimming lake again for several years . The quarry pond is also the venue for the annual Ingolstadt fishing festival.

Animal enclosure

As part of the local recreation area, the animal enclosure at the Ingolstadt Baggersee was built right next to the Baggersee in 1970 . It includes around 40 native wild animals, including numerous bison , wild boar and deer . The enclosure is about 10 hectares and freely accessible.
