Bahiret el Bibane ( Arabic بحيرة البيبان, DMG Buḥayrat al-bībān  'lagoon of the gates') is a lagoon in southeastern Tunisia in the Medenine governorate .

The lagoon is about 10 km north of the city of Ben Gardane and 20 km south of the city of Zarzis and covers an area of ​​230 km². The dunes on the spit reach a height of up to 10 m. The length of the coastal water is approx. 32 km, it is a maximum of 10 km wide and an average of 4 m deep. There are several passages to the Mediterranean Sea , the widest of these channels is 800 m wide.

Nature reserve

The wetland of the lagoon is a nature reserve under the Ramsar Convention . It is spawning area of Mediterranean fish and resting place of a number of species of birds including flamingo , cormorants and cranes , whistling , Pintail and Shoveler , Big and Whimbrel , Schwarzkopf , minke and black-headed gull .

In the gulf in front of the lagoon, oil and gas are produced .
