Beilngries station is the name of the station in Beilngries . When it opened in 1888, it was the terminus of the Sulztalbahn from Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate , which was later extended to Dietfurt . With the opening of the railway line towards Eichstätt in 1930, the Beilngries train station was relocated. The first, old station remained as a freight station. Both stations are now closed.

Shortly after the opening of the direct main line from Nuremberg to Regensburg via Neumarkt in the Upper Palatinate , the branch line was opened in 1888 along the Sulz valley to Beilngries. It was planned as a standard-gauge railway from the start and - in contrast to the Eichstätter branch line - was officially opened on June 1, 1888 after a short planning and construction period.

The regional political situation suggested connecting the neighboring Dietfurt an der Altmühl to the local railway line. This extension was completed on September 11, 1909. From this point on, the station in Beilngries was no longer the terminus of the Sulztalbahn, but remained the southern control center for handling passenger and freight traffic until the end.

The situation at the Beilngries train station only changed at the end of the 1920s. Until then, the station was a curiosity in the Bavarian railroad landscape, as it formed, together with the local train station in Kinding (Eichstätter Local Railway) and the one in Greding, an incoherent structure that awaited the connection. Even with the expansion - the narrow-gauge one-meter railway from Eichstätt to Kinding at the time - there was a demand to close the gap between the cities of Eichstätt and Neumarkt. This connecting railway was prevented by the state railway administration. Further planning after 1919 was on the one hand the difficult economic situation and on the other hand the different gauges in the way.

Only an economic development program in the 1920s and 1930s was supposed to close the gap. In connection with the Altmühl regulation, a railway line between Kinding - the end point of the Eichstätter local railway at the time - and Beilngries was realized. The route from Beilngries was continued to Kipfenberg . Beilngries received - the routing required it - a new station. By 1935, the narrow-gauge railway from Eichstätt to Kinding was also expanded so that normal-gauge operation could take place between Neumarkt and Ingolstadt.

But as early as the 1950s, the achievements of the previous decades were eliminated. In 1956, the German Federal Railroad closed the section between Kinding and Beilngries. Beilngries was thus only a through station between Neumarkt and Dietfurt with a connection to a few commercial tracks. With the closure of the line to Dietfurt in 1967, Beilngries was again the terminus of the Sulztalbahn.

In 1987 the end of this branch line was also a done deal. On the one hand, the Bundesbahn had long since deleted the branch line from the investment list; on the other hand, the construction of the Main-Danube Canal required a large part of the railway site. Shortly after the last train left Beilngries, the line was dismantled.

Today there is not much left of the railway systems. On the one hand, the old train station is in its original location, with an unhistorical tram. On the other hand, the remains of the old embankment to Dietfurt can be found next to the B 299.

The Beilngries train station was north of the city, between 900 and 500 meters away on the side of the Sulz river, which later flows into the Altmühl . It was located between the Ludwig-Danube-Main Canal in the north and the old town, thus not only offering an inexpensive and fast connection to goods transport for goods traffic.

In a curve to the southeast, the railway line reached the "old station". The main track widened to a three-part track harp, to which a multi-track wooden loading area was attached to the southeast. In the course of the expansion to Dietfurt, the middle track was continued as the main track and continued over a railway embankment and a bridge to Dietfurt.

In the north there was a two-tier machine house with an official residence. In the south was the actual train station with a loading hall and ramp. The loading hall gave way to a connection to a private warehouse, which was accessed with a turntable. The company building from the early days is the only one that still exists today and is used as a restaurant.

In the course of the connection of the Sulztalbahn to Kinding and on to Eichstätt, the first Beilngries train station was rededicated and given the name » Güterbahnhof «.

The new station was located north of the old station and extended in a north-south direction. Its three tracks, designed according to the length of use, enabled continuous train operation from Neumarkt to Eichstätt and from Neumarkt to Dietfurt. This would not have been possible with the old station area, so that a new building was necessary, which now functioned as a separation station.

The company building was very generously equipped. Service apartments were on the upper floor, the waiting room and ticket office for travelers on the ground floor. On the platform side, which was covered, there was also a protruding glazed extension with the signal box . The course was set mechanically until the facilities were dismantled.

A loading shed with butt track was assigned to the company building, which handled the freight traffic. The new station took up all passenger traffic in Beilngries from 1930 and was rebuilt in 1956 because the initial main connection from Neumarkt via Beilngries to Eichstätt was discontinued. The former main track became a siding for a warehouse.

Dismantling of the lines from 1956 to 1989

In 1935, the line from Neumarkt via Beilngries, Kinding and Kipfenberg to Eichstätt (train station) was open to traffic for the first time. But just twenty years later, the Deutsche Bundesbahn began to dismantle the line. In 1956 the section between Beilngries and Kipfenberg was closed for passenger traffic and partially dismantled. The Beilngries traffic junction became a simple through station again.

The further dismantling took place with the closure of the section between Beilngries and Dietfurt. The city now had a passenger station ( new station ) and the old station , through which freight and goods traffic was handled.

In September 1987, the age of the railroad finally ended in Beilngries: the 25th of the month was the last day of operation for passenger transport on the Sulztalbahn. It ended after 99 years. Occasional freight traffic and special trains ran until July 1989. However, as the major construction site of the Main-Danube Canal approached, the Deutsche Bundesbahn began to dismantle the line.

The relics of the railway era in Beilngries are sparse. Most of the former railway area has disappeared under the Main-Danube-Großschifffahrtsstraße and the new construction of the federal highway 299 . Only the old company building from 1888 has been preserved. Today an inn is located here, which has otherwise well preserved the structure of the building. To the north of it was the entrance to the old train station ; the new one was further north at the height of today's marina.

In addition to the ramp for the transfer of the railway line to Dietfurt via Maria-Hilf-Straße, the course of the route can still be clearly traced on the streets and paths. The route towards Eichstätt is no longer recognizable due to the residential development. Bahnhofstrasse has been preserved as a further relic in the townscape of Beilngries.
