The Bilbao-Atxuri station (Spanish Estación de Bilbao-Atxuri , Basque Atxuriko Geltokia ) is a terminus station in the Basque city of Bilbao . It is the terminus of three lines of the Euskotren railway company and is located in the district of the same name in the Ibaiondo district.

history

The Compañía del Ferrocarril Central de Vizcaya , a predecessor company of the Euskotren, opened its first terminus here in 1882. However, this was no longer sufficient for the increasing number of passengers and the growing urban population, so that in 1912, according to the plans of the architect Manual Maria Smith, today's station was built in the Neo-Basque style, which was opened in 1914.

traffic

railroad

The station is the end point of the two EuskoTren routes from Donostia-San Sebastián via Ermua and Berneo and thus an important transport hub in the Bilbao region and the Basque Country. Euskotren also operates the only direct rail connection between Bilbao and Donostia, with the Renfe this is only possible with a change in Miranda de Ebro . That is why the station is very important for commuter and tourist traffic. In addition, the headquarters of EuskoTren is located in the station building.

tram

Atxuri is also the end point of the tram Bilbao , EuskoTran called. Line A connects Atxuri with the renfe main train station Abando , the Museo Guggenheim Bilbao and the Cercanías train stations of San Mamés and La Castilla.

future

EuskoTren is planning a rail connection from Etxebarri station to the Casco Viejo inner-city traffic junction , where an EuskoTren line already ends and the Bilbao metro also runs. It would also shorten the transfer route to Abando and Concordia (FEVE) stations, which are now on the other side of the river. The EuskoTren line Atxuri - Etxebarri would be closed for rail traffic and taken over by EuskoTren, which can extend its line A.
