history

The private railway company Hokkaidō Tetsudō opened the station on November 3, 1903, together with the section of the Hakodate main line from Mori via Oshamambe to Neppu. After the nationalization on July 1, 1907, the Railway Office (later the Railway Ministry ) was responsible. On December 13, 1929, this began operating the first section of the Setana line to Hanaishi, which began in Kunnui; It took another three years to complete this branch line leading to Setana . In 1939 the station building was replaced by a new building.

In 1966 the Japanese State Railways expanded the Kunnui – Nakanosawa section of the Hakodate main line to two tracks, and four years later the Kunnui – Kita-Toyotsu section. On February 1, 1984, for cost reasons, it stopped handling and checking in luggage. In addition, service by express trains ended on November 1, 1986. The Setana line was shut down on March 16, 1987 along its entire length, making Kunnui a pure through station again. Two weeks later, on April 1, 1987, the station became the property of the new company JR Hokkaido as part of the state railway privatization . The station has not been staffed since 1992.
