The Setana Line ( Japanese 瀬 棚 線 , Setana-sen ) was a railway line in the south of the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It was opened in three stages between 1929 and 1932 and was in operation until 1987.
description
The Setana Line was a 48.4 km branch line that crossed the Oshima Peninsula from west to east. It was cape gauge and not electrified. The line began at Kunnui Station on Uchiura Bay , where it branched off from the Hakodate main line. It then led through the Kunnui Valley to the Pirika Reservoir. From there we continued through the Shiritoshibetsu valley to the coast of the Sea of Japan , then the last three kilometers north to the Setana train station .
Kunnui was not the actual terminus of the Setana line; all regional trains ran from Oshamambe station nine kilometers further north . From 1966 to 1984 an express train ran once a day from Hakodate via Kunnui to Setana.
history
From 1918, a decade before construction began on the railway line, a horse-drawn bus ran once a day from Kunnui to Setana and back. The Ministry of Railways opened the first section of the Setana Line on December 13, 1929. It was 16.6 km long and led from Kunnui to Hanaishi. On October 30, 1930, the 14.0 km long section from Hanaishi to Imagane followed. With the commissioning of the 17.8 km long section between Imagane and Setana on November 1, 1932, the route was completed. The switch to operation with diesel multiple units took place on October 1, 1957, and the last special steam train ran on June 30, 1974.
For cost reasons, the Japanese State Railways stopped freight traffic on September 1, 1983. On March 16, 1987, two weeks before the state railroad was privatized, it shut down the entire Setana line. This was replaced on the same day by a bus line operated by Hakodate Bus . A section of national road 230 now runs on the former route between Hanaishi and Kita-Sumiyoshi .
