The Nemuro-Shibetsu station ( Japanese 根 室 標 津 駅 , Nemuro-Shibetsu-eki ) is a former train station on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It was located in Nemuro Sub-Prefecture in the Shibetsu City area and operated from 1937 to 1989.

description

Aerial view (1977)

Nemuro-Shibetsu was the northeastern terminus of the Shibetsu line to Shibecha and Attoko . The station was in the city center and was oriented from north to south (on the northern outskirts, the line made a wide curve to the southwest). It had a track for passenger traffic and a house platform , the station building was on the east side. There were also two tracks for freight traffic and a small depot with a turntable on the west side . The line ended in a siding around 150 meters south of the station. Apart from the turntable, nothing of the facility has been preserved; the reception building was demolished.

history

The Ministry of Railways opened the station on October 30, 1937, along with the section between Nemuro-Shibetsu and Nakashibetsu . With that the Shibetsu line was completed. From 1962 to 1986 express trains ran from Nemuro-Shibetsu via Nakashibetsu and Shibecha to Kushiro . There were plans to continue the Shibetsu Line towards the Shiretoko Peninsula and link it to the Konpoku Line to Shiretoko-Shari , but the project was abandoned after its closure in 1970. In 1967 the Japanese State Railways replaced the station building with a new building. For cost reasons, she abandoned cargo handling on April 30, 1980, and checked baggage on February 1, 1984. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . This shut down the Shibetsu line on May 1, 1989.
