The Shiretoko-Shari station ( Japanese 知 床 斜 里 駅 , Shiretoko-Shari-eki ) is a train station on the Japanese island of Hokkaidō . It is located in Okhotsk Sub-Prefecture in the Shari City area .

description

Shiretoko-Shari is a through station and former separation station on the Senmō main line . This leads from Abashiri to Higashi-Kushiro and is operated by the JR Hokkaido company. Passenger trains run four times a day from Abashiri to Kushiro and back, as does the Shiretoko express train once a day . In addition, there is a regional train from Abashiri to Shiretoko-Shari or Midori and back. There is a bus terminal on the station forecourt , which is served by several lines of the Shari Bus and Abshiri Bus companies. The bus line to Shiretoko National Park is of particular importance .

The train station is located in the city center and faces west to east. It has five tracks, three of which are used for passenger traffic. These are located on the main platform and on a covered central platform , which is connected to the reception building on the northern edge of the facility by a covered overpass . The reception building contains shops and a tourist information center. There are two small depots south of the train station, both of which are connected via the same platform . They are used to park trains and railway service vehicles .

history

When the Ministry of Railways opened the section from Kitahama to this point on September 10, 1925, the station was initially called Shari ( 斜 里 ). It was the final destination for a little over four years, until the opening of the subsequent section to Sattsuru on September 14, 1929; two years later the Senmō main line was completed. Under the supervision of the Ministry of the Interior , the Shari Line, a 17.9 km long small railway along the coast with a gauge of 762 mm , was built to further develop the region . It operated from 1932 to 1953, was drawn by horses and was mainly used to transport agricultural products to Shari station.

From Shari, the Konpoku Line was to be built to Nemuro-Shibetsu , where it would meet the Shibetsu Line . Work began in 1938, but had to be stopped three years later due to the lack of resources during the Pacific War . After work had rested for over a decade, the Japanese State Railways opened the 12.8 km long section to Koshikawa on November 10, 1957. Due to a lack of profitability, the Konpoku line, which was never completed, was shut down on December 1, 1970.

In 1971 the state railway replaced the station building with a new building, and on October 18, 1973, it put a container terminal into operation. For cost reasons, it stopped both cargo handling and baggage check on February 1, 1984. As part of the privatization of the state railway, the station passed into the possession of the new company JR Hokkaido on April 1, 1987 . On April 11, 1998, this gave the station its current name Shiretoko-Shari to indicate the nearby national park. Another renovation of the reception building took place in 2007.
