The Tain Station is a transit station on the northern edge of the Scottish town of Tain .
location
The station was established in 1864 by the Inverness and Aberdeen Junction Railway , which merged with the Highland Railway in 1865 . It is on the Far North Line , the northernmost railway line in the United Kingdom . The closest stations on the route are Fearn station to the south , Meikle Ferry station, which is no longer serviced, to the north and Ardgay station , the next one that is still in operation . A platform is available for passengers on either side of the single-track route. They are connected by a pedestrian bridge with stairs and a diagonal protective grille on both sides.
Station building
The one-storey station building from 1864, which is no longer used for railway purposes, is made of roughly hewn natural stone and has no plastering. The floor plan is H-shaped: two parts standing across the route are connected by a longitudinal structure, in the middle of which were the areas for the passengers. The entrance to the city is set back and flanked with a stone pilaster on each side, the continuous roof is supported here by two cast iron columns. On the track side, a canopy provides protection for waiting passengers along the entire length between the transverse structures; this too is supported by six cast iron pillars.
The transverse structures have three narrow, high windows directly next to each other on both the city side and the track side, which can be moved vertically to open . On the rail side they are each crowned with a common decorative gable . The roof of the complex is made of slate and has two crossed gables . The building has been registered as a Category B Listed Building since 1978 and is therefore a listed building .
