Tain ( Gaelic : Baile Dhubhthaich ) is a town in the Scottish Council Area Highland . It is located about 40 km north-northeast of Inverness and 80 km southwest of Thurso on the south coast of the Dornoch Firth . Tain is the oldest Royal Burgh in Scotland and received this status in 1457. In 2011 Tain had 3,655 residents.
West of Tain is the whiskey distillery Glenmorangie , which has been in operation since 1843 ; the Balblair distillery, active since 1790, is located about seven kilometers west in Edderton .

Tain is on the major A9 trunk road that connects Edinburgh with Thurso and crosses the Dornoch Firth over the Dornoch Firth Bridge a few kilometers west of Tain . Furthermore, Tain has had its own train station since 1864 , which the Far North Line serves regularly.
