The Hamburg-Wandsbek station is a stopping point for regional traffic in the Hamburg district of Marienthal . It was created in 1865 during the construction of the Hamburg – Lübeck railway line , which cuts through the Wandsbeker wood here . The Hamburg freight bypass has been branching off here since 1902 . Between 1916 and 1966, the Wandsbeker Industriebahn began a little further to the east and , along with other companies, mainly supplied the Wandsbeker yeast factory (now Ohly) .

investment

The station has a partially covered central platform that is reached via an underpass. The platform was renewed in 2003 and received a new roof, an elevator, new signs and new lighting.

To the east of the platform there are some sidings and loading tracks. Most of the former freight tracks have, however, been dismantled. A goods shed that is no longer used by DB is still there.

history

As early as 1875/76, the line from Lübeck to Hamburg was expanded to two tracks. Under Walther Brecht , at that time the chairman of the Lübeck-Büchener Eisenbahngesellschaft , an express train service to Copenhagen and Stettin was set up, the trains of which also stopped in Hamburg-Wandsbek. Due to the structural reorganization , the station was modernized .

The station was initially called Wandsbeck before it was renamed Hamburg-Wandsbek on April 1, 1938, as a result of the Greater Hamburg Act .

Former station building

The three-part building was opened in 1865. The single-storey central wing was originally decorated with a gable and clock. Two two-storey tracts are added to the side, which served as an entrance and exit hall. The eastern wing was changed after it was destroyed in the war.

Despite the changes, the plastered building with its classicist individual forms is a listed building . There is now a restaurant in the building.

future

As part of the construction of the S4 S-Bahn line to Ahrensburg , the plan is to close the station as a passenger train stop in 2020 and to replace it with two new stops: Wandsbek Town Hall 300 meters west and Bovestrasse about 300 meters east of the current train station. The move is intended to make it easier to switch to several HVV bus routes and to shorten the routes to the Asklepios Klinik Wandsbek and the Wandsbek market square .
