The Upper Ore Mountains Railway was opened as early as 1858 , but it was not until 1868 that Wilkau received a stop on this route, which was elevated to a freight station in 1870. With the opening of the first Saxon narrow-gauge railway in 1881, Wilkau was already a train station whose design with four station tracks corresponded to the typical Saxon train stations of the time. The narrow-gauge railway systems were simply built between the standard-gauge systems, operational disadvantages such as five level crossings between narrow-gauge and standard-gauge were accepted cheaply, although the main track of the standard- gauge was always closed during shunting work or train journeys on the narrow-gauge railway .

Wilkau station after the expansion

In 1885 a complete renovation of the station was planned as the station was now much too small. After several years of preparatory work, construction began on August 31, 1893. By 1896, the building was fundamentally rebuilt and expanded. The old station building was also torn down and rebuilt about 300 m to the west. Due to the relocation of the narrow-gauge platform, the narrow-gauge railway began to be kilometered with minus figures. At the same time, the station also received a segment turntable (another was located in Carlsfeld station), which was extended again in the 1960s for the planned new diesel locomotives. A reloading hall with two tracks for both gauges , a road bridge that replaced the level crossing in the station area, a new goods shed and locomotive handling systems for the narrow-gauge railway were also built. However, there was no engine shed.

The operational service was made even more difficult by the conversion, instead of five there were now six crossings between narrow and standard-gauge railways. The two-track expansion of the Upper Ore Mountains Railway added two more crossings, so that there were now eight. Until before the renovation, the narrow-gauge systems were separated into travel and goods traffic, but this separation was lifted with the construction of the reloading hall.

Today's stop, built in 2007

In 1901 a gantry crane was set up to facilitate the handling of bulk goods , which was in service on the narrow-gauge railway until operations were closed. In 1934 the station was renamed Wilkau-Haßlau after the merger of Wilkau and Niederhaßlau . After the cessation of operations on the narrow-gauge railway on June 2, 1973, it lost its importance. In January 2005, the station was finally downgraded to a stop. Today only the two main tracks are left of the once numerous tracks. On December 2, 2011, the city of Wilkau-Haßlau auctioned the station building; the first security work was carried out on the building.

The area of the freight yard was gradually dismantled from 2000. In 2007 a new barrier-free platform was opened. In 2009 the city of Wilkau-Haßlau bought the entire freight yard area and built a new fire station for the local volunteer fire brigade on it by 2011 .
