Southwest Saxony

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Southwest Saxony is a region in the Free State of Saxony .

Location and name of the region

The region largely comprises Vogtland that Westerzgebirge and parts of the Middle Ore Mountains and the southern and western areas of the Pleissenland .

The region was roughly congruent with the former administrative district of Zwickau-Südwestsachsen, which emerged from the Zwickau district administration in 1939 . In the 1990s, the Chemnitz Regional Council, under the leadership of then President Noltze, extended the term to the Chemnitz administrative district, which emerged from the Karl-Marx-Stadt district after German reunification.

Instead of South-West Saxony , the term West- Saxony has established itself for the Chemnitz-Zwickau agglomeration after reunification . The Vogtland is often not included as an independent region. The designation can lead to confusion with the northern region of Leipzig , because in the documents mentioned this is referred to as the planning region of West Saxony .

history

South-west Saxony has been settled since the 10th century during the German settlement in the east , but it was only with the Great Berggeschrey that rapid economic development began. The Vogtland, which had been in the hands of the Wettins since the 14th century , and the Schoenburg lordships belonged to the south-west Saxony region . As early as the end of the 18th century, and especially in the 19th century, there was a second economic boost, so that south-west Saxony was one of the most economically strong and densely populated regions in Europe well into the 20th century.

Natural structure

South-west Saxony is located in the natural area of the Saxon Uplands and Central Mountains .
