history

The administrative district of Zwickau-Südwestsachsen emerged on the basis of the Reich law on the re-naming of the administrations of December 23, 1938 based on the Prussian model from the Zwickau district headquarters , according to which from January 1, 1939 the district headquarters as administrative districts, the administrative authorities as districts and the independent cities as urban districts were designated.

After the Second World War, administrative districts should first be established again. The administrative districts and districts were dissolved by the post-war ordinance of April 26, 1946 on the establishment of district administrations. The administrative tasks were performed by district councils / district assemblies until 1952, the year the GDR districts were founded (cf. district reforms in the GDR ). After the state structure was smashed, state districts were established in the GDR in 1952, with the state of Saxony being divided into three districts. The former administrative district of Zwickau was incorporated into the Karl-Marx-Stadt district. After the establishment of German unity in 1990, the country structure was reintroduced in the area of the former GDR. The administration of the state of Saxony was then carried out on the territorial basis of the GDR districts through three government districts, which were renamed into state directorates with the district reform of Saxony in 2008 , before these were completely abolished on March 1, 2012. With the administrative reform, the fourth largest city in the Free State and former city of Zwickau, on the initiative of the Milbradt Cabinet, was also deprived of the remaining privilege of district freedom .
