The Börringe – Östra Torp railway was a standard-gauge Swedish railway line in Skåne , one of the five railway lines in Skåne ( Ångspårvägar in Swedish ) operated by steam railcars . It was built in two parts, between Börringe and Anderslöv by Börringe – Anderslövs Järnvägsaktiebolag (BAJ), a private railway company , and between Anderslöv and Östra Torp by Börringe – Östratorps Järnvägsaktiebolag (BÖJ).

history

When Malmö – Ystads Järnvägsaktiebolag (MYJ) was founded, a twelve-person body was formed that met on December 3, 1872. Count Corfitz Beck-Friis was elected chairman of the board of directors, the committee also included Count Arvid Posse, Baron Julius Stjernblad, Count O. Thott, Rittmeister M. Hallenborg, Chamberlain G. von Geijer, Consul H. Friis, landowner P. Kockum and Kaufmann W. Luttropp.

The assembly decided to apply for a concession for the Malmö – Ystad route . It was also decided to apply for a concession for the Börringe – Anderslöv line and to build it if enough money was available.

The concessions for both routes were issued on February 4, 1873. A cost estimate for the Börringe – Anderslöv was prepared by Lieutenant E. Sandell from Vägoch vattenbyggnadskåren ( German  road and water engineering office ). The cost was estimated at 300,000 crowns including the vehicles. The line should be built with the gauge of 1,067 mm, as it was planned for the Malmö – Ystad line. The route was to be built with rails weighing 17 kg / m per meter .

As early as December 1872, attempts had been made to interest various people in purchasing shares in the proposed branch line. Interest was low, and another attempt in 1873 produced the same poor result. It was not until the third attempt in 1882 that shares were sold for almost 150,000 crowns. It was decided to commission the engineering office Wessel & Posse from Gävle with the cost estimates for a railway with a light superstructure, which was to be built as a steam tram. The route was to be eight kilometers long and in standard gauge with 1435 mm. The cost was estimated at 262,000 crowns including the vehicles.

Since the old license had expired, MYJ applied for a new license, which was granted on May 31, 1883. The concession stipulated, among other things, that the planned weight per meter of the rails had to be increased from 14.8 kg / m to 17.2 kg / m, the construction work should start no later than June 1, 1883 and the route should be open to traffic on June 1, 1884 must be available.

Börringe – Anderslövs Järnvägsaktiebolag

In the early 1880s a new attempt was made and shares were subscribed for for 150,000 kroner . Now Malmö – Ystads Järnvägsaktiebolag applied for a new, revised concession with 1435 mm gauge, which was approved on March 24, 1882. This led to the establishment of Börringe – Anderslövs Järnvägsaktiebolag in 1883 , which was given the license. Construction work began in the same year and the completed line opened on February 21, 1884. Without vehicles, the route cost 262,000 crowns.

Börringe – Östratorps Järnvägsaktiebolag

In 1885 the company received a concession for an extension for the line from Anderslöv to Östratorp (Anderslöv – Östratorps Järnväg). This line was opened on October 1, 1887. The name of the now complete route and the company was changed to Börringe – Östratorps Järnväg (BÖJ).

The name of the place Östratorp changed in 1950, it is now called Smygehamn .

vehicles

The line was one of the five railways in Skåne known as steam-powered railroad lines . These were railway lines that were built as cheaply as possible for reasons of cost. Lighter rails were used and steam railcars were used in train operations, in which the conductor also performed that of the stoker in addition to his duties. The railcars could carry a few freight or passenger cars. This system comes from Denmark , where William Rowan undertook experiments with a dampsporvej . The Danish Randers – Hadsundsbanen and Gribskovbanen were operated as the first railways of this type . The findings there formed the basis for the Ångspårvägar in Skåne . The first Swedish line of this type was Gärds Härads järnväg .

The following vehicles were procured to operate the route:

number Surname design type Wheel alignment Manufacturer Fabr.-No./
year of construction
Special
1 ANDERSLÖF Tank locomotive 2 B t Nydqvist & Holm AB , Trollhättan 189/
1883

2 SMYGE Tank locomotive 1 B t Hanomag , Hanover 1924/
1887
1934 redrawn to BÖJ 50, 1941 to SJ Å6 1606 , scrapped in 1944

To start traffic, Börringe – Anderslövs Järnvägsaktiebolag procured a steam locomotive and a steam multiple unit as well as two passenger and ten freight cars. In connection with the extension of the line to Östratorp after 1887, another steam locomotive from Germany and twelve freight cars were purchased from Kockums mekaniska Verkstad . In the following years more vehicles were bought.

nationalization

As part of the general nationalization of the railway , on July 1, 1941, all railway companies that were part of the Trafikförbundet Ystads Järnvägar consortium were nationalized. Statens Järnvägar took over the train service.

Shutdown

Passenger traffic was discontinued on November 1, 1957, the end of freight traffic followed in the Börringe – Anderslöv section on April 14, 1959 and between Anderslöv and Jordberga on August 1, 1960. From Anderslöv the freight trains ran over the Börringe – Anderslövs until the same date Järnväg via Klagstorp and on via Trelleborg – Rydsgårds Järnväg to Trelleborg. The entire route is dismantled.

Sections of the former embankment can still be recognized. In addition, some train stations have been preserved.
