The Jelgava – Liepāja railway connects the Latvian cities of Jelgava and Liepāja over 180 km . The line is not electrified and mostly single-track, only the 16 km long section from Jelgava to Glūda is double-track. Above all, find freight to the port of Liepaja place, also operates weekly one pair of trains in passenger transport , Friday from Riga to Liepaja, Sundays back.

history

The Jelgava – Glūda section was opened in 1873 as part of the Jelgava – Mažeikiai railway. The junction from Glūda to Liepāja was built from 1925 to 1929, at the same time the existing section received its second track.

Train operation

In the 2001 summer timetable, the route was still being used by two trains per day in each direction, until August 15, 2001, operations were completely stopped for financial reasons. From March 30, 2006, a daily pair of trains ran the route again, but with significantly fewer stops than before. On February 15, 2010, the offer was again restricted, from then on only two pairs of trains per week ran in passenger traffic.
