The Neuburxdorf – Mühlberg railway is a standard-gauge branch line in Brandenburg , which was originally built and operated by the Kleinbahn-Aktiengesellschaft Burxdorf – Mühlberg . The route runs from Neuburxdorf on the main railway Jüterbog – Falkenberg – Riesa to Mühlberg / Elbe .

history

Track opened in 1909

Share of 1000 RM in Kleinbahn-AG Burxdorf-Mühlberg from February 25, 1929

The Kleinbahn-AG Burxdorf – Mühlberg opened on September 17, 1909, the passenger and goods traffic on their normal-gauge line located in today's Elbe-Elster district . The district has belonged to the state of Brandenburg since the reunification of Germany.

When it was founded on December 3, 1908, the Kingdom of Prussia , the Province of Saxony, the Liebenwerda district , the city of Mühlberg and a Mühlberg merchant had taken over the shares. The siding to the sugar factory in Brottewitz , which had existed since 1873, was included in the construction.

In 1919, the vehicle fleet consisted of two steam locomotives, three passenger cars, one pack car and 18 freight cars. In 1939, only one railcar was added to the stock; it was built by Gottfried Lindner AG in 1937 . In the years 1930 to 1937 the Kleinbahn also operated its own bus line from Mühlberg via Burxdorf to the district town of Liebenwerda.

The company was called from August 14, 1939 Kleinbahn-AG Neuburxdorf – Mühlberg and from October 20, 1942 Eisenbahn-AG Neuburxdorf – Mühlberg.

The small railway department of the Provincial Association of Saxony in Merseburg ran the business until 1945/46 . In 1947 the railway was transferred to the Sächsische Provinzbahnen GmbH and on April 1, 1949 to the Deutsche Reichsbahn . This stopped the passenger traffic on September 30, 1961.

Takeover by the Deutsche Regionalisenbahn

Reopening of passenger rail transport after 46 years in Mühlberg (Elbe) with the Elbe-Elster-Express with the piglet tax 171 056

After 46 years, Deutsche Regionaleisenbahn GmbH (DRE) resumed occasional passenger transport to Mühlberg on July 6, 2007 as part of an EU-funded civil railroad project. For the summer of 2008 it was planned to run two pairs of trains on the Elbe-Elster-Express from Falkenberg / Elster to Mühlberg on Saturdays , with one pair of trains to be extended to Schlieben . The DRE had previously taken over the short section from the Kieswerk junction to the Mühlberg station as a connecting line. This was converted into a public infrastructure on April 25, 2008.

The scheduled operation could initially not be started because the property owner of the Mühlberg train station had applied for an injunction . However, this was refused by the Bad Liebenwerda District Court , so that passenger traffic could begin on May 17, 2008. In July 2008, however, the traffic was stopped again due to insufficient demand. In order to avoid the construction of a crossing structure when building the bypass (L 67), the traffic-free section behind the junction to the gravel works was put out to tender by the DRE and then closed.

outlook

Due to the extensive freight traffic to the gravel works of Elbe-Kies GmbH in Mühlberg and to the plant of Südzucker AG in Brottewitz , the line is not in danger of being closed.

Due to the lack of switch connections, it is not possible to stop at the house platform in Neuburxdorf station. The planned construction of a new platform after the Mühlberger line had been unthreaded near the level crossing became obsolete with the renewed cessation of passenger traffic.

Route description

The starting point is the Neuburxdorf station, which is on the Falkenberg – Riesa line built by the Berlin-Anhaltische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . The route is threaded from the track leading in the direction of Riesa towards the northwest. In a westerly direction, the train reaches the Langenrieth stop south of the eponymous town after 2.3 kilometers and the connection to the Brottewitz sugar factory after 4.5 kilometers. There the route swings in a 90 degree curve to the south and leads along the eastern Elbe high terrace after about 7 kilometers to the connection to the gravel works in Mühlberg. At the beginning of this, the approx. 700 m long track branched off in a south-westerly direction to the train station in the city of Mühlberg / Elbe. The management was also based here. Between 1910 and 1918, a two-kilometer long port railway in Mühlberg was part of it.
