The Pečky – Zásmuky railway is a regional railway connection in the Czech Republic that was originally built and operated by the Austrian Local Railway Company (ÖLEG) as a state-guaranteed local railway . It begins in Pečky and leads to Zásmuky in Středočeský kraj .

According to a decree of the Czech government, the line has been classified as a regional railway ("regionální dráha") since December 20, 1995.

history

The concession for a " Locomotiv railway from the Peček station to Zasmuk with branches " was awarded to the ÖLEG on August 28, 1880. The law also stipulated the permit for a branch line to Kouřim and to the Karlsthal sugar factory (cukrovar Karlov) in Svojšice. The ÖLEG opened the lines of the local line Peček – Zasmuk with all branch lines on February 15, 1882. The operation was carried out by the ÖLEG itself.

The route opened up an agricultural hilly country in the middle of Bohemia, where sugar beet cultivation and sugar production were particularly characteristic. In the local railway area there were a total of four sugar factories connected by branch tracks, for example in Pečky, Plaňany, Svojšice and Zásmuky.

On January 1, 1884, the ÖLEG license was transferred to the privileged Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company (StEG). This built a supplementary line from Zásmuky to Bečváry, which was put into operation on August 1, 1887 only for freight traffic. When the connecting line of the local line Kolin – Čerčan – Kácow was opened, passenger traffic began on August 6, 1901. From then on, both routes were operationally one unit and continuous passenger trains ran between Pečky and Bečváry.

After the nationalization of the StEG on October 15, 1909, the line became the property of the kk Staatsbahnen (kkStB). As a result of the First World War lost by Austria , the line belonged to the network of the newly founded Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) from 1918 . The first ČSD timetable from 1919 showed a total of two pairs of passenger trains over the entire route, only one of which ran to and from Bečváry.

In connection with the reconstruction of the train station in Pečky, the ČSD built a new, cheaper line between Pečky and Radim in the early 1950s, which was opened on April 9, 1953. The old route remained in the urban area of Pečky as a connecting railway for the local industry.

"Podlipanský motoráček" in the Zásmuky train station (2010)

At the end of the 1980s, the timetable of the local railway had the heaviest train traffic in its history: the 1988/89 annual timetable recorded a total of 14 pairs of trains between Pečky and Kouřim. Eight pairs of trains ran on the further route between Bošice and Zásmuky.

After the velvet revolution in Czechoslovakia in 1989, the volume of travel and freight traffic gradually declined. Faster bus routes and increasing individual transport pulled travelers away. On January 1, 1993, the line was transferred to the newly founded České dráhy (ČD) in the course of the dissolution of Czechoslovakia. With the timetable change on December 10, 2006, the scheduled travel between Bošice and Zásmuky and on to Bečváry was finally stopped.

Today there is only regular local rail passenger transport between Pečky and Kouřim. A total of 12 pairs of trains run every two hours, which is compressed to an hourly cycle during rush hour on weekdays. Today all trains run without a train attendant and stop at all stops only when necessary. Freight traffic only takes place when required. Today, passenger trains only run between Bošice and Zásmuky in the summer half of the year. Two pairs of trains run as "Podlipanský motoráček" between Pečky, Kouřim, Zásmuky and Bečváry. Historical railcars from the private railway company KŽC Doprava are used .
