Operation and history

Railway viaduct at Coo

The line was opened on July 1, 1890 by the Belgian State Railways .

The line was completely modernized in the 1990s. The work, which included the electrification of the entire route, the renewal of road crossings and signaling technology, was completed in spring 2000. For this purpose, the route in the Aywaille – Trois-Ponts section was reduced to one track in order to be able to achieve higher speeds on this section, which is rich in tunnels, by straightening the route.

The line was equipped with the CFL power system (25 kV alternating current). The limit to the 3 kV direct current network of the SNCB is in Martinrive, near Rivage.

Local traffic does not take place on the route. The entire route is only used by long-distance trains on InterCity line 33 (Liers – Liège – Luxembourg) every two hours. The offer in the Gouvy-Liège section is partially increased every hour. In addition, there are two intercity trains on line O from Gouvy to Brussels and vice versa. The CFL series 3000 with three to four conventional express train carriages are used.
