The Wallwitz – Wettin line was a single-track, non-electrified branch line in Saxony-Anhalt . The about 9 km long branch line was opened in 1903 and led by Wallwitz at the halle-vienenburg railway to Wettin . In 1971 the line was closed.

history

prehistory

Until the end of the 18th century, Wettin was one of the economically more important places in the region north of Halle due to coal mining. However, a gradual decline began at the beginning of the 19th century, as hard coal mining became increasingly unprofitable. The population fell from around 7,000 at the end of the 18th century to less than 3,000 in 1825. The beginning of industrialization did not affect Wettin either, the biggest problem was the completely inadequate transport links. Therefore, efforts were made to establish a railway connection as early as the 1860s. Inquiries to the Magdeburg-Halberstädter Eisenbahngesellschaft regarding the planning of the Halle – Aschersleben line opened in 1871/72 were unsuccessful. On the one hand, the route would have been in the flood area of the Saale, on the other hand, the construction costs in the rocky area around Wettin would have been significantly increased. At least Wettin received a stagecoach connection to the Nauendorf train station, less than 10 km away .
