Bai Konte

Alhaji Bai Konte (* 1920 in Brikama , Gambia, † 1983 ) is a musician and Jeli from Gambia . He played the West African instrument Kora , a 21-string bridge harp. He was the first musician to play this instrument live in the United States in 1973 at the Newport Jazz Festival .

Two of his four sons Dembo Konte and Sherrifo Konteh are also known for their Kora music. Bai Konte's grandfather, Ndaba Konteh, moved to Brikama from the Kankaba region of Mali.
