Place name

Baile na hAbhann is the original Irish name and means place of residence on the river . The English name is Ballinahown or Ballynahown . Until recently, both the Irish name and the English name were in use side by side. Since a change in the law or its implementation for the Gaeltacht areas from 2003 to 2005, the original Irish name Baile na hAbhann is the only legally valid place name today.

The English name Ballynahown from the Ordnance Survey of the 19th century, which is merely a phonetic imitation of the Irish name with the help of English orthography, has thus lost its effectiveness in legal disputes. Since the traffic signs in the Gaeltacht areas have been written in Irish for a long time anyway, clear relationships have now been created.

pronunciation

As already mentioned, the English place name is in many cases only the phonetic imitation of the original Irish name. The pronunciation is therefore often similar or even identical in both languages. In the case of Baile na hAbhann / Ballynahown , the latter applies. In German spelling, the name can be reproduced as Bale na Haun , with the emphasis on the au in the last syllable.
