Bajram Rexhepi
Bajram Rexhepi (born June 3, 1954 in Kosovska Mitrovica , SFR Yugoslavia , † August 21, 2017 in Istanbul , Turkey ) was a Kosovar politician . He was the country's first prime minister after the war in Kosovo . He was a member of the second strongest party in Kosovo, the Partia Demokratike e Kosovës .
Life
He graduated from the University of Pristina with a degree in medicine in 1979 and then went to the University of Zagreb until 1985 . From 1985 to 1990 he worked as a surgeon in his hometown of Mitrovicë.
During the Kosovo war in 1999, Rexhepi joined the KLA, where he worked as a field doctor for three months. In the first elections to the Kosovo parliament in November 2001, his party won 25.7% of the vote, making it the second strongest force after Ibrahim Rugovas Lidhja Demokratike e Kosovës . On March 4, 2002, Rexhepi was elected Prime Minister by the Kosovar parliament. In the next election on October 24, 2004, the Democratic Party was again second behind the LDK. On December 3, Ramush Haradinaj , later charged with war crimes in The Hague , succeeded Rexhepis as prime minister.
Rexhepi was also mayor of his native Mitrovica and president of the Society of Kosovar Communities.
Rexhepi was considered a moderate politician who campaigned for a balance between the ethnic groups in the country. To prevent the division of Kosovo between Serbs and Albanians, Rexhepi proposed an exchange of territory with Serbia ( northern Kosovo for the Preševo valley). He was married and had a daughter.
Rexhepi was transferred to a clinic in Istanbul after complications from an operation in a hospital in Pristina , where he died.
