Balaban is a former municipality in Darende County in the Turkish province of Malatya . Since a regional reform in 2012, the place is now part of the district town.

Balaban is about ten kilometers south-east of Darende in the south-east of the district on the D-300 highway. About five kilometers to the north, the Tohma Çayı , a tributary of the Euphrates, flows from west to east . Nine kilometers east of the village of Hisarcık (formerly Kötükale ) on the bank of the river is the location of the late Hittite rock inscription of Kötükale , which has been buried since road construction work in the first half of the 20th century.
